Fifth Class News - Hand of Friendship

Over the course of this year, Ms. Mc Ginn’s fifth class have been taking part in a project called Hand of Friendship. There have been six modules. Hand of Friendship is a project where children explore topics such as friendship, diversity and sectarianism and how they may resolve conflicts arising throughout their lives. Through working together on hands-on, interactive modules, students form friendships with others from across the community and across the border.

But it wasn’t just our school that took part in this project. St. Brigid’s Primary school from Brocagh in Dungannon, Aughnacloy primary school and Clontibret National School took part too.

We were put into groups with around three people from each school in them. Then we did various activities such as surveying each other, designing sports events and artwork. We got two breaks also in which we were served snacks and delicious food.

In the final Module “Working it Out” we did a sports event through maths. We played darts, basketball, skipping, penalty shoot outs and bowling. We showed our scores in averages, percentages, fractions, decimals and ratios. At the end everyone was awarded a Certificate. It was very enjoyable and we all loved it.

Green School Committee

If you've visited our school recently you'll have noticed signs on all the external doors encouraging you to 'Keep This Door Closed'. This is part of a new initiative by the Green School Committee to try and reduce the amount of heat loss. We are also encouraging people in our school to 'Turn Off the Lights' if they're not needed. All this is part of our attempt to win our next Green Flag. The theme this year is Energy. We are busy trying to reduce the amount of fossil fuels we use to heat and light our school. We will be putting the results of our efforts on the webpage soon. It's a lot of hard work but we are lucky to have a very active and involved committee under the chairmanship of Morgan Murphy from Sixth Class. On Saturday the 26th and Sunday the 27th, the Ulster Champions went down yet again to the National Finals in Athlone and had great success!

The u16 team (Darragh Cooper, Tom Lynch, Kelvin Cawley, Ryan Aughey and Dylan Maguire) finished 4th place. They fought hard in the semi-final against Munster but came out second losing 5-0. They were sad but they pulled themselves together and went into Sunday's game full of confidence. They fought even harder this time but again finished out with a loss of 4-1 with Kelvin winning the only game. They still held their heads up high and accepted 4th place.

The u12 (Josh Maguire, Killian McAdam, Lorcon O'Rourke, Shane Gavan, Luke Coyle, Oisin Fagan and Ogie Duffy) finished a magnificent 2nd place! On Saturday, they played Munster and it was a tie with wins from Josh and a fantastic win from Lorcon leaving it a tie as Luke drew and Killian and Shane were very unlucky as they were runners up in their games. The score was 2 and a half to 2 and a half. The boys got a fifteen minute break and then went in and beat them 4-1 with wins from Josh, Killian, Lorcon and Shane. They were so happy as they began the long journey home. The next day they got ready to play the biggest match of their life. Unfortunantly they were runners up losing only 3 and a half to 1 and a half. As the u16 they held their heads high and became the 2nd best team in Ireland.

It was a great day out and it only got better when the whole team went mad on the bouncy castles! The boys managers were so proud. (Raymond Aughey, Gerrey Maguire and Columba Lynch)

It was a great day out!
